About the Department

The Department was established in 1984, and the B.Lit. Tamil programme was introduced in 2006. The department offers M.A. Tamil and Ph.D. programmes. It is supported by a dedicated team of 19 faculty members, of whom 14 are doctorates, 1 is awaiting Ph.D. Viva-Voce, and one faculty member is currently pursuing Ph.D. Notably, 10 faculty members have qualified in UGC-NET and SET. Our students have consistently secured top university ranks. Ms. A. Rihana Begum achieved the 1st Rank in the Bharathidasan University Examinations (2024–2025). Additionally, 9 of our students have cleared UGC-NET and have taken up positions as Lecturers in our college and other institutions.

To preserve, promote, and propagate the richness of Tamil language, literature, and culture while nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and a deep sense of identity among learners—fostering both academic excellence and societal impact.

Mission

  • To offer comprehensive education in Tamil language, classical and modern literature, and cultural history.
  • To instill linguistic pride and cultural awareness through the study of ancient texts, folk traditions, and contemporary writings.
  • To encourage research and innovation in Tamil studies through interdisciplinary approaches.

Department Highlights

  • Best Arts Department Award – 2022 & 2023
  • Best Department Award for maximum student participation in competitions conducted by Kurunji Kabilar Tamil Sangam (2022–2023)
  • Many staff members have received prestigious awards from various institutions.
  • Faculty members actively participate in renowned Tamil organizations such as Kulithalai Tamil Peravai, Sangam Literature Study Centre, and Thanikai Tamil Sangam.
  • The department conducts Muthamizhvizha every year — a vibrant platform for school students to exhibit their talents in literature (elocution and essay), poetry, music (Carnatic and folk, vocal and instrumental), and drama. Schools in and around Trichy participate enthusiastically.
  • A Talent Hunt Competition is conducted annually for all first-year students of the college.
  • The Department of Tamil signed an MoU with the America Muthamizh Ilakkiya Peravai, USA, and jointly conducted International Conferences in 2022–2023 and 2023–2024.
  • The department has published two books: Mouval (2020) and Konmoo (2025), with contributions from all faculty members.
  • With funding support from the Central Institute of Classical Tamil, Chennai, a National Seminar on Panmuga Nokkil Agasthiyar was organized in the academic year 2024–2025.
  • The department has secured five patents, reflecting its commitment to innovation and scholarly advancement.
  • Coaching classes for UGC-NET / SET are provided to final-year PG students.
  • UG and PG students receive regular coaching for TNPSC Group Examinations.
  • Workshops are organized with expert instructors in Journalism, Archaeology, and Mass Communication.
