INAUGURATION AND GROWTH
Prof.P.S.Manisundaram the first Vice –Chancellor of the Bharathidasan University was good enough to appoint an Inspection commission promptly and the members of the commission were also good enough to visit the college on 10th Oct 84 and submit their report without delay. All the directions of the commission having been duly compiled with, affiliation was granted in record time for 2 sections of B.com and 1 section of B.sc Mathematics and classes commenced with benign blessings of His Holiness the Jeer of Sri. Ahobila Mutt on 15th October ’84.

The college was named Shrimati Indira Gandhi College in respectful remembrance of our dynamic former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and was formally inaugurated by our former president and most illustrious alumnus of National College, His Excellency Shri. R.Venkataraman, the then Vice-President of India on 17th Nov ’84. His Excellency was pleased to visit the college once again on 25th March ’87, to unveil the size statue of Indira Gandhi installed near the western gate of the college. It was this statue of Indiraji, that was garlanded by her illustrious son and successor – Prime Minister Honb’le Rajiv Gandhi on 6th August ‘88during his visit to Tiruchirappalli.

With the grace of God and the benign Blessings of the Paramacharya and the untiring efforts of our Founder Secretary the college thus begun has had a period of rapid expansions in strength, courses and infrastructure in the shape of series of multi-storeyed Blocks
